PRESS RELEASE                            October 1, 2014

October 14th is World Standards Day

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards will join the global community in the observance of October 14th as World Standards Day.

World Standards Day 2014 is being observed under the theme, “Standards level the playing field.”

The day celebrates the work of those who participate in the development of standards.  Standards are critical to our life, ensuring our safety, health, protection of the environment, creating efficiencies in business, promoting innovation and making trade in goods across borders possible.

This year the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards has organized a series of activities to mark the observance with its flagship event being the recognition of the volunteers in Saint Lucia who are involved in the work of standards development.

The technical committee award programme is an annual affair which has a very important place in the calendar of activities.  Close to one hundred national standards have been developed and some forty five international standards have been adopted using the expertise of volunteers in different spheres of work.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Royal St. Lucian by Rex on October 14th.  The SLBS will also be using the World Standards Day observance to engage bakers in a half day workshop slated for October 16th at the Coco Palm Hotel.

The focus on bakers is important for the finalization of a proposed certification programme to build consumer confidence in the sector.

The certification programme will be against two important standards one for bakeries and the other for general principles for food hygiene.

Bakers are being encouraged to attend for their continued input into the implementation of the programme.

For the second year running the SLBS will be making presentations to students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.  The SLBS expects to meet over one hundred students from October 8th to the 17th.

The SLBS is excited about this partnership with the SALCC to bring standards education into the classroom.  The application of standards is largely done in the world of work.  The aim is to introduce standards at the tertiary level in the hope that when students become employees they would have some understanding of where standards apply in their fields of endeavour.

The departments of mechanical and electrical engineering, applied sciences, hospitality and business will be engaged over the period.

On World Standards Day, October 14th, Minister of Commerce, Investment and Consumer Affairs, Honourable Emma Hippolyte, will deliver an address to the nation.  The Minister’s address will give life to the theme in a discourse of the role of standards in facilitating trade and sustainable economic development.
