STANDARDS Link VOL 2 ISSUE 12 - Certification Department to Lead The Way in 2014
The Certification Department has set an ambitious work plan for 2014 with a number of programmes moving into new phases of implementation during the year. In the first quarter of 2014 under the FAO/SLBS Agriculture Certification project a number of farmers and inspectors will receive training in Good Agricultural Practices.
The training will target broiler, swine, small ruminant, aquaculture, honey and dasheen production. At the end of the training phase some 80 farms will be inspected for certification to the relevant standard(s).
With 80 farms expected to be certified this is expected to keep the department inundate with activities for the year and bring the SLBS exactly where it aims to be in the promotion and creation of facilities for a quality infrastructure.
The policy direction of the SLBS in recent years has been to give certification more prominence in conformity assessment.
Other sectors will not be outdone by agriculture in that effort, a new certification programmes for beauty and wellness facilities and bakeries will get off to a running start in 2014 with consultations and workshops The certification program allows practitioners to benchmark their products and services against top quality procedures within their industry .
The department has promised that despite the attention to the new initiatives its regular services offered in Basic Food Safety, HACCP and Quality Management Systems Training will continue with the department expected to continue promotion of these for greater participation.
